To mark the Burmese new year (occurind around mid-April), this unique festival features the throwing/spraying of water around cities and on people passing by to symbolize annual spiritual purification, “washing away” any accumulated misdeeds or bad luck. The festival is timed to mark the end fo the hot/dry season in the region and also coincides with the Thai new year celebration known as Songkran. These photos capture the thick of action from Yangon, Myanmar where the ritual is most widely held, where people gather and drive around in pickup trucks to be drenched in water!
